The image below identifies the major features of Audience Builder. Below that are their descriptions and instructions.
Base Audience Name
If you are optimizing an existing audience, the name of that audience will appear at the top-left of the Audience Builder. Otherwise, it will identify this as a “New Audience.”
To the right of the Base Audience Name are the Gender & Age filters. The Age bar spans the ages of 18 to 65+, and you can choose, by sliding either circle along the bar, a continuous age range that you wish to target within the following parameters:
- Eligible minimum ages: 18, 25, 35, 45, 55
- Eligible maximum ages: 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, 65+
To the right of the Age filter is the Gender filter. You can choose one of three targeting options:
- All (both men and women)
- Men
- Women
Audience Definition
The Audience Definition pane is beneath the Age & Gender filters on the upper-right. It reveals the estimated size of the audience being constructed. The population size will change as filters are applied or removed and as Audience Blocks are added to or removed from the targeting spec.
Note: If a Facebook Custom Audience makes up any part of the audience spec, no size will be given. “Reach Estimate Not Available” will be displayed. This doesn’t mean you can’t use the audience to target ads. You just won’t know how big it is. You also won’t be able to use it to run Audience Map.
On the left side beneath the Base Audience Name is the Facebook Audiences pane. Clicking on "Browse" toggles the display of the Custom and Lookalike audiences that have been created in your Facebook ad account. You can select as many audiences as desired from either or both dropdown lists.
Each selection will appear in the display box marked with a blue-colored left edge. If you wish to delete one of the audiences in the box, simply click on the ‘x’ at the right end of its "pill" (the elongated oval containing the name of the audience).
Below the Facebook Audiences is the Audience Blocks pane. Selections can be made from four sources: Facebook search, Tapcast Blocks, My Blocks, and Favorite Blocks.
Facebook search
Facebook search works much like it does in Facebook’s Asset Library when searching for interests and behaviors. Type in a search term or part of one and choose from the list of suggestions that appears.
Tapcast Blocks
The list in Tapcast Blocks is comprised of the same dimensions that appear in an Audience Map, and they are arranged hierarchically in alphabetical order by panel (e.g. Demographics), then by dimension group (e.g. Education Level), and then by dimension (e.g. Finished college).
My Blocks
If you have created any My Blocks (Audience Blocks that you have customized yourself), they will be listed here for you to use in your audiences.
If you have marked any Favorite Blocks, they will be listed here for your easy retrieval and use in your audiences.
Your selections in the Audience Blocks section will appear inside the Block marked with a red-colored left edge. Each Block can contain multiple selections. You can add as many dimensions to each Block as you wish. Adding to a Block generally tends to increase the size of your audience.
To create a new intersecting Audience Block, click the “Narrow Audience” link before making another selection. The new Block will be placed underneath any existing Audience Blocks, and it will have the same selection options that the first one does. You can create as many intersecting Audience Blocks as you wish. Narrowing generally focuses and decreases the size of your audience.
If you need to add to a Block you created earlier within your audience, simply make another selection from the dropdown lists directly below it. If the lists aren’t displayed, toggle them on by clicking “Browse.”
Note: This only works for new Blocks being created in your audience. A Block in an existing audience (such as when you are optimizing an audience) cannot be expanded. You can, however, edit new Blocks that you create in an existing audience.
To delete a Block, click the ‘x’ in its upper-right corner. An individual item in a Block can be deleted by clicking on the ‘x’ at the right end of its “pill.”
The Location pane under the Audience Blocks allows you to target United States cities, ZIP codes, and states. If no locations are selected, the geographical target is the entire United States. You can select multiple locations. The first location selected will narrow the target to that one area, but each one you add beyond the first will expand your targeting geographically and thus increase the audience size.
To add a location, select the Location Type.
Then enter the location name or part of it and select from the list.
Selected locations will appear in the Block marked with a yellow-colored left edge. A location can be deleted by clicking the ‘x’ at the right end of its “pill.”
Tabs
In the far upper-right corner of Audience Builder are three tabs. You are currently on the “Build/Optimize” tab. The “Audience Map” tab will take you to the Audience Map for this audience, and "Targeting Ideas" will help you get audience targeting ideas for the audience. These two tabs are active only if an Audience Map has been created for this audience. They will otherwise be grayed out.
Buttons
In the bottom-right corner are two buttons. The “Cancel” button will return you to your dashboard, and you will lose any changes you’ve made.
The “Save Audience” button opens a dialog box. Give your audience a descriptive name. This will be its name on the Tapcast platform as well as the name of the Facebook ad set that will be created.
The ad set will be saved in your Facebook ad account under a campaign titled **DO NOT ERASE -- TAPCAST AUD**.
Click the “Save Audience” button to complete the process. In addition to creating the ad set in your Facebook ad account, Tapcast runs Audience Map on the new audience and saves it to your account. It will appear under the “Ad Sets” tab in your account on your dashboard.
